Remembering Apollo 1 - 50 Years Later

50 years ago today, on January 27th, 1967, three astronauts died while on a test mission inside the Apollo 1 space capsule.
Their names are Gus Grissom, Edward White and Roger B. Chaffee.
They were testing the spacecraft for their upcoming launch on February 21st.
Suddenly, something went horribly wrong.
A fire broke out and the trapped brave men perished.
The escape hatch would take much longer to open than the time they had left in the capsule to survive.
Trapped and dead in seconds.
NASA and America were stunned.
The space program went on and men walked on the moon in 1969.
Neil Armstrong's "One small step" would not have been possible if it were not for the heroes before him.
The men of Apollo 1 top that list of heroes.
